Dexter Morgan is a handsome, polite, and charming wolf in sheep’s clothing. By day, he is a forensic blood spatter pattern analyst for the Miami police department. By night, he is a serial killer with a dark past. The catch is, Dexter only kills those people who deserve to die. But when a new series of murders with shocking similarities with his own style of killing appear, Dexter is caught between trying to help his foster sister, Deborah (a policewoman for the Miami police department), catch the fiend and feeding his own curiosity as to find who this person is and how he works.
The book is set in Dexter’s perspective and gives you a peek inside his mind. I find it very intriguing to know what and how he thinks. It can sometimes be a little too intriguing though. Dexter’s sociopathic thoughts are a little disturbing at times when he thinks about the new serial killer and how he loves their work as well as his way of killing his victims.
The story itself is very dark. I found myself a little freaked out by Dexter’s thoughts. Though I did like it’s wit and humor that popped up, even in climactic times. I didn’t really like Deborah’s character. She seemed a little to whiny and dependant on Dexter. It seemed like she cared more for her career than for actually catching the character. I didn’t really like Dexter either. He seemed a little too perfect with his wit and charm. I found myself getting bored with the story line and skimming a couple of passages. It’s not that it was a boring, it was just that it droned on for a while.
The climax bothered me also. It seemed very sudden and I didn’t find myself excited or on the edge of my seat when I was reading it. When it was done I just stared at it like, “That’s it?” But I did enjoy it at times.
If you want a quick rating, I would give this book a three out of five stars
My next book: Digital Fortress by Dan Brown.
